Weekend Wows and Winners: The 2013 Billboard Music Awards

This year’s Billboard Music Awards, hosted by Tracy Morgan, were action-packed with over 15 musical performers, controversial performances and artists winning big.  Held at the MGM Grand this past Sunday in Las Vegas, Billboard gave us a night to remember.  PMBC Group, Los Angeles’ entertainment PR firm, highlights five of the night’s biggest events with this weeks Weekend Wows and Winners.Image

1.  Taylor Swift, as always, won big, taking home eight awards.  The awards included “Top Artist,” “Top Female Artist,” “Artist of the Year,” “Top Billboard,” “Top Country Artist,” “Tops” in the Billboard 200 and country albums categories, and “Top Country Song” for her hit single “We Are Never Getting Back Together.”

2. The night featured show-stopping performances by over 15 musical artists including Justin Bieber, Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, Akon, Madonna and Will.I.Am, Prince, David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Miguel, The Band Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Bruno Mars, Iconopop, Chris Brown and more.

3. The most dramatic event occurred when singer, Miguel, attempted to jump over the crowd and fell on top of a female fan, Khyati.  Suffering only minor injuries, Khyati got the opportunity to meet the singer backstage! Miguel subsequently tweeted, “Got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay.”

4.  Selena Gomez gave a rather controversial performance of her hit single, “Come and Get It.”  The performance was Bollywood-themed, and the singer/actress donned a bindi, the traditional Hindu ornament.  Hindu leaders protested Gomez’s performance, saying that it was “insensitive” and “trivialize[d] Hinduism.”

5.  Also sparking some excitement was Gomez’s on-again-off-again beau, Justin Bieber.  The 19 year-old singer was booed after receiving the new “Milestone Award.”  Bieber defended himself during his acceptance speech saying, “this is not a gimmick, and I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously.” We agree Justin.
