Weekend Wows and Winners: Entertainment and Sports Take Top Headlines

Here at PMBC Group, a Los Angeles PR Firm, we take notice on what transpires in pop culture. From the realms of entertainment to sports, we know of five headlines that not only caught our eye but generated buzz for this weekend’s Wows and Winners.

  1. Robin Thicke performed his hit single “Blurred Lines” this past weekend at the BET Awards. His number one album has had so much success that Thicke is currently contemplating a name change to “Blurred Lines” of course, but for now we’ll just have to wait and see.
  2. The BET Awards 2013 was another great success. Expecting nothing less than amazement, it was the stars that shined on this year’s media filled red carpet.
  3. The 2013 Confederations Cup was also much anticipated, as the young powerhouse of Brazil defeated the World Cup Champion Spain 3-0 at home. Arguably the best two teams in the world, this was a test for both teams before next summer’s World Cup.
  4. Jessica Simpson made headlines again as she gave birth to her second child, little Ace Knute Johnson. Simpson had a scheduled C-section Sunday in Los Angeles, this according to her representative.
  5. Ray Donovan,  Live Schreiber’s latest crime drama, shot to the top of the premium cable network ratings, making it the best-ever for an original series, surpassing Showtime successes Homeland and Dexter.

What was your weekend highlight?

Victor Oladipo Wears Google Glass During NBA Draft

With the NBA Draft there have been reports of Dwight Howard’s unlikely return to the Lakers and insight into the soon to be blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets, helping the sports realm make top headlines. However, here at PMBC Group, we were most dazzled with former Indiana Hoosiers guard Victor Oladipo for something he was sporting that was a bit surprising.

Oladipo was taken second overall in the NBA draft by the Orlando Magic Thursday night, rocking his Google Glass around the draft room before waiting to hear his name called by NBA Commissioner David Stern. We found this to be an unprecedented, but impressive accessory complementing his already classy attire.

Google Glass, if posted on social media platforms, will allow fans to follow and acquire a new perspective from the lens of an NBA Draftee, and not only does this piece of technology cash in at $1500, but it is not expected to be released until next year.

Humans Are Truly Awesome

Over the past few days, a video has gone viral, which showcases some truly incredible examples of humans being awesome.  The 4 1/2 minute video entitled “Humans Are Awesome” features clips of daredevils engaging in a variety of incredible stunts from skydiving to big-wave surfing to motocross.  And we here at  PMBC Group, a Los Angeles based Technology PR firm, can’t stop watching it!

Youtube user, Gerry B. has compiled some of his favorite extreme Youtube videos and created one action-packed video, which provides just as much visual stimulation from Gerry’s brilliant editing skills as it does from the jaw-dropping acts it features.  All of the footage is captured on extreme sports-capable GoPro video cameras.  Gerry goes the extra mile with the original footage by editing it masterfully with captivating cuts, impressive fast- and slow-motion and thrilling background music (“Time” by Luckner, featuring Sophie Louise).  See for yourself below!  Our favorite death-defying moment is at 0:50!

This definitely makes us want to go out and get active this weekend!

What do you think of this “awesome” video?

Spurs’ Ginobli Dazzles the Heat

With Spurs fans wondering if their beloved, former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Manu Ginobli would ever arrive to make an impact in this year’s NBA finals, he returned to form just in time by leading his team to a 114-104 game five victory over the Miami Heat to take a 3-2 series lead.

Feeling what was at stake, Gregg Popovich made an unexpected but strategic move by incorporating Ginobli into the starting line-up, and it was rewarded as Ginobli contributed with 24 points and 10 assists. With the Heat not losing consecutive games since early January, Lebron James and his teammates will head back to Miami and try to force a game seven. However, the Spurs have other plans as they will attempt to end the Heat’s streak and raise the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.

Here at PMBC Group, a Los Angeles PR Firm, we are excited to see who will be this year’s NBA Champion and raise next year’s banner.

Do you think the Heat will force a game seven, or will the Spurs close it out in six?

NHL Stanley Cup Final Sparking Some Buzz

Taking three periods of overtime and nearly the duration of two games to determine the victor of game one of the NHL Stanley Cup, the second game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins is brewing up to be another classic. As the Blackhawks came from behind to take a thriller in game one, the Bruins are looking to storm back and square up the series by taking game 2.

Don’t expect the Bruins’ vets to back down, as they were in a similar situation after losing the first two games in the 2011 Cup Final and battled back to win the series in seven games. Expect this battle to be a long series, as neither recent champ is expected to let up without putting up a fight. With this classic series occurring right before our eyes, the NHL should see a growth in fans to follow next season. Here at PMBC Group, a Los Angeles sports professionals PR Firm, we are excited to see all of the excitement revolving around this year’s Stanley Cup Finals.

Who would you like  to see win it all?

USPA Certifies the Temecula Valley Polo Club

Galway Downs Equestrian Center was filled with applause on Friday night, as Geraldine Strunsky, president and cofounder of The Temecula Valley Polo Club, along with members and friends, celebrated the club’s recent certification by the United States Polo Association.

Temecula Valley Polo Club, PMBC Group

Friday night attendees included Robert Kellerhouse, the center’s manager; Scot Walker, the lieutenant governor of the USPA and board members, all of whom were able to preview the upcoming season, and walk the new field.

Last year, Galway Downs’ owner Ken Smith converted the center’s racetrack infield into a regulation sized polo field, the perfect setting for The Temecula Valley Polo Club. With the newly acquired certification, the club is permitted to host clinics and start a polo school to introduce the sport to novice riders. Strunsky also plans to form teams and invite other Southern California clubs to compete. The club, which is set to open in May, will partner with local nonprofits and charities to host events during the May through October season. Beloved Sports Role Model Makes Life-Changing Confession

PMBC Group, Los Angeles’ premier sports PR firm, likes to see when the nation’s top athletes succeed. Thus when Lance Armstrong spoke with Oprah, a tune-in was a must to see what our beloved cyclist had to announce.

Sports PR, PMBC Group

Lance Armstrong has an eminent list of accolades including multiple Tour De France titles, leading him to have won over the nation’s heart as one of the greatest cyclists of our time. However, with many medals comes scrutiny that for some ends in controversy. Early this week, one of the greatest role models of our generation sat down with Oprah to make a heart-felt confession. Armstrong came clean about taking performance enhancements.  As this comes to light, we have to remember all the good Lance Armstrong has also done for the world of sports and humanity as a whole. Livestrong was among one of his greatest accomplishments helping raise funds and awareness for those with cancer.  As this announcement hits the public, we will have to see what repercussions come to his great, up-standing legacy.

Good-Bye to the NHL Lockout But Are Fans Saying Good-Bye Too?

The NHL and the renowned players of the ice finally came to an agreement this past Sunday, officially ending the lockout. After four long months of dispute, fans, players and the NHL alike can finally rejoice in the action-packed sport that notably leaves fans on edge.  In the marketing perspective where does this leave the NHL now? Many have been posing questions on whether fan size will decrease.

Sports PR, PMBC Group

PMBC Group, Los Angeles’ Sports PR Agency, is excited for the comeback of the season but many wonder how the fans will react. Obviously there are those, die-hard fans, who held on to their season tickets but for those avid fans who tune in or trickle in to watch lives game, have they changed their decisions? NBC Sports asked around 50,000 fans on their thoughts about whether or not they would come back to the NHL and results stated that, “54% answered yes and 12% said they never followed the sport, while 12% are taking a wait-and-see approach and 18% responded no.” On top of the 18% what happens with the extra 30%? The lockout definitely hurt the fan base and we will wait and see how the rates turn out. We’re keeping our hopes high for that puck in the net!

Are you going to watch this NHL season?
